はじめに
リバプール出身のグループ、「サーチャーズ（The Searchers）」の代表曲
この「恋の特効薬」の原題は「Love Potion No.9」。
64年にリリースして65年1月に全米3位までいった。
サーチャーズ（The Searchers）はビートルズの成功以後イギリスからアメリカに進出した多数のグループの中で、他のグループに比べて卓越したコーラスワークと非常に爽やかで洗練されたサウンドに特徴があった。
また品格の良さを備え、バンドとしての実力がありながら抜きん出た地位に上れなかった要因は、残念なことにオリジナル曲を作り出す力が無かったのが致命的だったと考えられている。
オリジナルは別にあった
この曲を初めて知ったのは多分殆どの人がサーチャーズのバージョンと思われるが、実はオリジナルは彼らではなく59年に全米23位までいったアメリカの黒人ドゥーワップ・グループのクローヴァーズ（The Clovers）であった。
すなわちサーチャーズ（The Searchers）のヒット曲はカバーということになる。
歌詞の意味
歌詞の内容はたわいのないもので、恋と縁の無い若者がジプシー占いのマダム・ルーに作ってもらった怪しげな惚れ薬No９。
飲むと昼も夜もわからなくなって誰にでもキスしたくなるという効能があるのだが、お巡りさんにまでキスしてしまってそこで薬の入ったビンを割られてしまってお終いという話。
